The purpose of this work is somehow ambitious, for it means to look through almost a century (1910-2002) of a controversial Country, of a complex History expressed by some of the texts of its most representative authors. The issue is simple: at the beginning of the century, in the mod-ernist context, Lugones proposes a highly positive vision, of praise and greatness. Borges recognises some errors, but there is still a fervent pride of being Argentinean and of being the descendant of those who built the Fatherland. In our scheme, this author constitutes the hinge between the initial image of the beginning of the century and the one that follows afterwards, in the second half and at the end of the XXth century. In fact, Cortázar and Tomás Eloy Martínez drop the positive look and they subscribe an arduous criticism, with the despair and the deep pain of belonging to a Country that seems to eject them, refuse them, sending them abroad, where these writers will produce the best of their work. The chosen texts are also a pretext to reflect on our identity and our literature.
